Course Components
- Pharmacology
Course Description: This course provides concrete knowledge on different drugs, and focuses on a practical and applied approaches to Pharmacology. The primary focus is on the brand name and generic names of drugs, which is essential for a pharmacy assistant when working in the pharmacy. Knowledge on different classifications, look-alike and sound-alike drugs, and their adverse effects will help in reducing the duplication of medication from the same class and thus reducing dispensing errors
- Anatomy and Physiology
Course Description: Anatomy is defined as the study of the body structures, and Physiology is the function of the body structures. It is important for a pharmacy assistant to have a brief idea of the body systems and how they work. This course will help them in understanding Pharmacology, and where and how medications act in the body.
- Industrial Pharmacy and Pharmaceutics
deals with studying all the unit operations involved in drug delivery manufacturing, the scaling up, processing and development of these drug delivery systems and dosage forms at the industrial level and encompassing quality assurance with its branches quality control and Good Manufacturing Practice in its context. Additionally, the students will learn an application of unit processes in mixing, granulation, tableting, coating, and capsule filling and evaluation
- Pharmacognosy
This course focuses on study of basic information on pharmacognosy and medicinal plants regarding classification and identification of their components, providing information on different naturally occurring secondary metabolites. The course will emphasize the chemical, biological and therapeutic activities of these compounds.
- Pharmaceutical Microbiology and immunology
The students will learn about the infections related to each of the human systems. The students will study the different methods of sterilization, disinfection, anti-sepsis, preservation and control of contamination. Antimicrobial efficacy and potency evaluation will be studied
- General chemistry
This course is a fundamental course for most undergraduate students. It gives an introduction to chemical facts and concepts as a mean to help understanding the world around us. Basic concepts: matter, units of measurements, uncertainty in measurements, stoichiometery equations, atomic and molecular weights, chemical calculation, reaction in solution and their calculations, structure of the atom, periodic properties of the elements, chemical bonding, molecular geometry and gases.
- Clinical Pharmacy
This course includes the study of the principles of general medicine and the factors influencing the selection of the appropriate medicine and the knowledge of clinical uses, pharmacokinetics, clinically significant side effects & drug interactions and contraindications to medications the dosage necessary a number of common diseases. The course also includes an explanation of the best treatment forms for the diseases according to the specific needs of each case.
- Adverse Drug reaction
This module discusses risk factors for allergy/anaphylaxis, lists medicines that are commonly implicated in allergic reactions, explains how to identify and characterise an allergic drug reaction, explains the importance of accurate diagnosis and recording of allergic reactions to drugs and the precautions that should be taken to prevent allergic reactions
- Common illness and nutrition
Basic facts and principles of human nutrition are presented. Study includes the physiological and psychological factors of food intake and utilization with emphasis on nutrition education for dietary improvements of groups and individuals. Emphasis is placed on the science of nutrition, the study of nutrients and of their ingestion, digestion, absorption, transport, metabolism, interaction, storage and excretion. Food group plans, the Dietary Guidelines, Food Exchange System, Recommended Dietary Allowances and other standards are reviewed to serve as a foundation for food selection.
- Quality control
A theoretical course deals with the quality control programs and methods used for the validation and assurance in pharmacy. The quality and services provided by the pharmacist in different pharmaceutical establishments will be discussed with emphasis on the quality control in pharmaceutical industry
- Practicum
Students gain practical and hands-on experience to apply the knowledge and skills learned in class to real-world experiences in a professional capacity.
